First Generic Versions of Depakote Approved

TUESDAY, July 29 (HealthDay News) — The first generic versions of depakote (divalproex sodium) have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat epileptic seizures, migraine headaches and bipolar disorder, the agency said Tuesday.

WEDNESDAY, July 30 (HealthDay news) — People whose mothers have had Alzheimer's disease may be predisposed to the mind-robbing condition, a new study finds.

The link may be a dysfunction in how the brain handles sugar — something that's probably genetic and starts years before symptoms of Alzheimer's appear, researchers say.

"Overall, these findings show that their brains are not working properly to stimulus with, and the metabolic impairment gets worse into the bargain time," explained surpass researcher Lisa Mosconi, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the Center for Brain Health at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City.

There is evidence that having a parent affected with Alzheimer's disease increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease four- to tenfold, Mosconi said.

Promising–yet preliminary–results from an early clinical trial show that the experimental drug abiraterone can significantly reduce the size of prostate cancer tumors in men who harbor’t responded to other therapies.

Researchers from the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Cancer Research in the United Kingdom recruited 21 men through late-stage prostate cancer who were no longer responding to hormone therapy and prescribed a once-a-day regimen of the pill abiraterone.

WEDNESDAY, July 30 (HealthDay news) — Researchers have uncovered a potential cause for postpartum pit, at least in mice.

According to the study, from ally researcher Jamie Maguire and direction researcher Istvan Mody, both of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, dysregulation of a particular class of proteins called GABA receptors on the surface of certain neurons in the brain may induce post-delivery mood disorders ranging from "baby blues" to postpartum psychosis.

The findings immediately suggest a possible therapeutic intervention, the authors noted.
