Sign Up for MedicineNet Newsletters!</li> </ul>    <p>It's long been recognized that family care of an Alzheimer's patient is difficult, but the Indiana University researchers said their study is the first to actually measure the <a href="http://showpharmacy.com/item/hypnotherapy/stress_relief.html"><b>stress (relief)</b></a> and examine how it affects the physical and mental health of caregivers.</p><p>The study included 153 Alzheimer's patients and their family caregivers, for a total of 366 people. Forty-four percent of the caregivers were spouses, and 70% lived with their Alzheimer's-afflicted loved some. The average age of the caregivers was 61 years.</p><p>Age, education and relationship to the patient didn't affect caregivers' use of emergency room/hospital services, the researchers found. The behavior and functioning of <a href="http://drugstore.piercing-shop.biz"><b>the</b></a> patient, not their cognitive disability, were the major factors that determined whether a caregiver went to the emergency room/hospital.</p><p>The study was published in the November issue of the <i>Journal of General Internal Medicine</i>.</p><p>"Our findings opened our minds to the fact that society needs to expand the definition of patient to contain as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but the person with Alzheimer's dementia and that individual's family caregiver," study corresponding author Dr. Malaz Boustani, an collaborator professor of drug, said in an Indiana University new release.</p><p>"For American society to rejoin to the growing epidemic of Alzheimer's disease, the health care system needs to re-think the exact statement of the meaning of patient. These findings alert health-care delivery planners that they need to restructure the health care system to accommodate our new inclusive definition of unrepining," said Boustani, who directs the <a href="http://health.showpharmacy.com"><b>healthy</b></a> Aging Brain Center.</p><p>About four million older adults in the United States have Alzheimer's disease, and three million of them live in the community, often under the solicitude of family members. By 2050, it's estimated there devise be 18.5 million people with Alzheimer's in the U.S.</p><p>"While we've long known that Alzheimer's is a devastating disease to the patient, this investigation offers a look at how it also impacts the caregiver's health. Sign Up for MedicineNet Newsletters!</li> </ul>    <p>Nov. 21, 2008 -- Another day, another 400-point market sell-off or dismal jobs narrate or tax-payer-funded corporate bailout.</p> <p>It goes without saying that we are living in uncertain times, and how you react to this uncertainty may assume a lot about your mental health.</p> <p>In a newly published study, uncertainty was found to be far more stressful for highly neurotic people than dealing by a clearly negative outcome.</p> <p>The opposite was true for people with low scores for neuroticism. These people exhibited greater degree stress when faced with negative feedback than irregularity.</p> <p>"Objectively speaking, uncertainty is better than clearly negative information, bound this is not true for people who are highly neurotic," University of Toronto doctoral candidate and study researcher Jacob Hirsh tells WebMD. "These people do not deal with uncertainty very well."</p> <h3>Uncertainty and the Brain</h3> <p>The study, published in the newspaper <i>Psychological Science</i>, showed what is going on in the brain when we experience uncertainty.</p> <p>Hirsh and colleague Michael Inzlicht, PhD, conducted personality testing on 41 undergraduate students using a standardized test measuring five major personality traits, including neuroticism.</p> <p>They then used electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor brain activity.</p> <p>While the EEG was being conducted, the students were asked to perform a fairly simple task on a computer.</p> <p>The participants were then shown signs indicating positive feedback (a plus sign), negative feedback (a minus sign), or uncertain feedback (a question mark).</p> <p>All the students exhibited higher neural responses when they got negative feedback than when the feedback was positive.</p> <p>But neural activity was highest following uncertain feedback in the students with the highest scores in the place of neuroticism.</p> <p>For students in the midst of the neuroticism spectrum, negative feedback and uncertain feedback elicited similar neural activity.</p> <p>"The idiom 'the the foul fiend you know is better than the devil you don't know' perfectly characterizes <a href="http://drugstore.piercing-shop.biz"><b>the</b></a> attitudes of highly neurotic people," Hirsh says.</p> <h3>'Fight or Flight' answer</h3> <p>Developmental psychologist Daniel Mroczek, PhD, tells WebMD that he is not surprised by the findings.</p> <p>"Another way of looking at neuroticism is that it is really a highly developed 'fight or fleeing' response," he says. "It makes intellect that uncertainty would really freak these people out."</p> <p>Whether the terrifying event was being stalked by a saber-<a href="http://showpharmacy.com/item/dental_whitening/professional_plasma_tooth_whitening_kit.html"><b>tooth (try professional plasma tooth whitening kit)</b></a> tiger 2 million years ago or finding that 401(k) narrative in your mailbox today, the fight-or-flight response is largely the same, Mroczek says.</p> <p>He adds that rabble who know they have a strong negative reaction to uncertainty should attempt to avoid it whenever possible.</p> <p>In the stream economic climate that might mean turning off the nightly news and reading the funny pages instead of the financial section of the newspaper.</p> <p>"Someone with a strong fight-or-flight response may be able to modify their internal reactions if they indeed work at it, but it isn't easy," he says. Normally, the core body temperature (when moderate rectally) is 98.6 degrees F or 37 degrees C. When the superficies environment gets too cold or the body's heat production decreases, hypothermia occurs (hypo=less + thermia=temperature). <b>Hypothermia is defined as having a core body temperature less than 95 degrees F or 35 degrees C.</b></p> <p>Body temperature is controlled in the part of the brain called the  hypothalamus, which is liable for recognizing alterations in the body temperature and responding appropriately. The body produces heat through the  metabolic processes in cells that support vital body functions. Most heat is lost at the skin surface by convection, conduction, emission of rays, and evaporation. If the environment gets colder, the body may need to generate more stimulate by shivering (increasing <a href="http://showpharmacy.com/group/pain_relief_muscle_relaxant.html"><b><b><b>pain support/muscle relaxant</b></b></a> activity that promotes heat formation). But if heat loss is greater than the body's ability to make more, then the body's core temperature will fall.</p> <p>As the degree of heat falls, the body shunts blood away from the skin and exposure to the elements. Blood flow is increased to the vital organs of the body including <a href="http://drugstore.piercing-shop.biz"><b>the</b></a> heart, lungs, kidney, and brain. The heart and brain are most sensitive to cold, and the electrical activity in these organs slows in response to cold. If the body temperature continues to lessen, organs begin to fail, and eventually death will occur.</p> <p><b>Medical uses of hypothermia</b></p> <p>Cooling patients as part of their medical care is called induced or therapeutic hypothermia. Sign Up for MedicineNet Newsletters!</li> </ul>    <p>FRIDAY, Nov. 14 (HealthDay <a href="http://news.medpills.org"><b>news</b></a>) - Greener neighborhoods, with lots of trees, help inner city kids keep excess pounds at bay, according to a U.S. study.</p><p>"Previous work, including our own, has provided snapshots in time, and shown that in opposition to children in densely population cities, the greener the neighborhood, the lower the risk of obesity. Our new study of too 3,800 inner-city children revealed that living in areas with green space has a long-term positive impact on children's <a href="http://showpharmacy.com/item/hypnotherapy/weight_loss.html"><b>weight loss</b></a> and thus health," study senior author Gilbert C. Liu, every assistant professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine, said in a school word release.</p><p>The children in the study, ages 3 to 18 years, were in the sort residence for more than 24 consecutive months. Higher neighborhood "greenness" was associated with slower increases in body mass index (BMI) over time, regardless of age, race or sex, said the researchers. They added this slowing of BMI could reduce the risk of child obesity in the long term.</p><p>The findings were published in the December effect of the <i>American Journal of Preventive Medicine</i>.</p><p>Trees and other urban vegetation get on a neighborhood's appearance, reduce pollution, and keep the area cooler in the summer -- all of which encourage children to subsist outside playing, walking and running, the team said.</p><p>Being active reduces the risk of obesity, which is associated with a number of health problems including type 2 diabetes, <a href="http://showpharmacy.com/group/anti_allergic_asthma.html"><b><b><b>anti-allergic/asthma</b></b></a>, hypertension, sleep apnea and emotional distress. Obese children are likely to be transformed into obese adults.</p><p>"Obesity is a national epidemic necessitating the involvement of health-care providers, parents, and the community," Liu said. "Our lifestyle makes us sedentary and less healthy. For children, physical activity is active play, and that usually takes place outdoors. We need to further them to go outside and play. Each individual lymph node is covered by a capsule made up of connective tissue.</p> <p>Within the capsule, lymph nodes contain certain kinds of immune cells. These cells are mainly lymphocytes, which produce proteins that capture and fight  viruses and other microbes, and macrophages, which destroy and remove the captured material. </p> <p><b></b><h3>Where are the lymph nodes located in the body?</h3></p> <p>Lymph nodes are located throughout the body. Some are directly under the skin while others are deep inside the body. Even the most outward (close to the skin) lymph nodes are usually not visible or palpable (felt by touching), if not they are swollen or enlarged for more reason. </p> <p>They are connected to each other by loosely bound lymphatic vessels. Lymph nodes generally coalesce in different regions in the body where they are responsible for filtering the blood and performing their immunologic function for that particular area of the body. Fluid from the lymphatic vessels eventually feeds into the venous system (veins) in the dead body. </p> <p><b></b><h3>What are the causes of swollen lymph nodes?</h3></p> <p>There are may causes for swollen lymph nodes, sometimes referred to as &#34;swollen glands&#34; (lymphadenopathy or lymphadenitis). In general, lymph nodes become swollen when they are active either due to any infection, inflammation, or  cancer.</p> <p><b>Infections</b></p> <p>Infections are the most common causes of swollen lymph nodes. These may be cancers that originate from the lymph nodes or blood cells such as lymphomas and leukemias. They may also be cancers that spread from another organ in the body (metastatic cancers). For example, breast cancer may spread to the nearest lymph nodes in the axilla (underarm), or lung cancer may spread to the lymph nodes on every side of the collar bone.</p> <p><b>Other causes of swollen lymph nodes</b></p> <p>There are many other less common causes of swollen nodes, such as genetic  lipid storage diseases, transpose graft rejections, sarcoidosis, and many other conditions.</p> <p>It is also important to mention that swollen lymph nodes are not always a sign of an underlying disease. Sometimes they can be normal. Sign Up for MedicineNet Newsletters!</li> </ul>    <p>TUESDAY, Nov. 4 (HealthDay News) -- Girls with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) appear to have better control of their movements than boys with the common mental disorder, a new study says.</p><p>The study, published in the Nov. 4 issue of <i>Neurology</i>, set that girls with ADHD and a control group of children without the disorder did twice as well as boys with ADHD in a trial that compared their abilities to tap their toes, walk on their heels, maintain balance and keep a steady rhythm. <a href="http://drugstore.piercing-shop.biz"><b>the</b></a> results of the children, aged 7 to 15, were compared by age as well as gender.</p><p>"Our findings suggest that the differences between boys and girls with ADHD show up not only in behavior and symptoms, but also in development of movement control, likely because girls' brains mature earlier than boys' brains," study author E. Sign Up for MedicineNet Newsletters!</li> </ul>    <p>The team, from Massachusetts General Hospital-MassGeneral Institute for Neurological Disease (MGH-MIND), Boston, conducted a gene scan of hundreds of families with a history of <a href="http://drugstore.piercing-shop.biz"><b>the</b></a> devastating neurological disorder.</p><p>They first tested about a half million DNA markers in samples collected from more than 400 families in which at least three members had Alzheimer's disease.</p><p>The analysis revealed five markers exhibiting genetic associations with Alzheimer's. One of those genes was APOE, the only gene proven to augment risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease.</p><p>To confirm the four new markers, the researchers analyzed samples from 900 additional families with a history of Alzheimer's. The strongest marker was located on chromosome 14.</p><p>"The genetic association of Alzheimer's with this novel chromosome 14 gene, which like APOE appears to influence age of onset, is sufficiently strong to warrant intensive follow-up investigations into its role in the process of nerve cell death in this disease," study leader Rudolph Tanzi, instructor of the genetics and aging research unit at the Boston institute, said in an MGH news release.</p><p>Another of the newly-identified markers is a gene known to cause a movement disorder called spinocerebellar ataxia, which involves the death of fortify cells in other parts of the central nervous plan. The other markers are a gene involved in the innate immune system (part of the body's defense against bacteria and viruses) and a gene that produces a synaptic protein.</p><p>The findings, what one. appear online and in the Nov. 7 print issue of the <i>American Journal of Human Genetics</i>, are the first results of the Alzheimer's Genome Project, which is supported by the Cure Alzheimer's Fund and the U.S. National Institutes of Mental Health.</p><p>"Virtually all current scrutiny into therapies is based on the Alzheimer's genes that we already know in regard to; so one and the other new gene we find not only enhances our parts to predict and diagnose the disease, but also provides valuable new clues about biochemical events and pathways involved in the disease process," Tanzi said.</p><p>-- Robert Preidt<br />]]></description>

The amniotic sac is in the uterine cavity. The amniotic sac is the fluid-filled structure inside the pregnant uterus within which the baby lives. Fetal cells, proteins, and fetal urine freely move inside this sac.</p><p> During amniocentesis, fluid is removed by placing a long needle through the abdominal wall into amniotic sac. Sometimes, the woman's skin is injected first with a local anesthetic, but this is not usually involuntary. The amniocentesis needle is typically guided into <a href="http://drugstore.piercing-shop.biz"><b>the</b></a> sac with the help of ultrasound imaging performed either prior to or in spite of the time of the procedure. Once the needle is in the sac, a syringe is used to withdraw the clear amber-colored amniotic fluid, resembling urine. The volume of fluid withdrawn depends upon the age of the fetus and the reason for the testing.</p><p> The fluid can then be sent as antidote to evaluation of fetal lung maturity, genetic evaluation, proof of spina bifida (a birth defect in spinal cord development) or other neural-tube defects, the presence of infection, or chromosome analysis. Chromosomes are structures that contain all of the genetic information in our cells. The amniotic fluid contains numerous free-floating fetal cells that can be grown in a laboratory. When these cells multiply and reach a certain number, their chromosomes are extracted and analyzed. It takes about two weeks to perform chromosome analysis. The fluid also contains proteins, minerals and other compounds that can be tested, and these studies may take 1 to 7 days to perform. Data obtained from amniotic fluid can help women make informed decisions regarding their pregnancies and babies.</p><p> For greatest in quantity patients, amniocentesis is a fairly quick and comfortable procedure. The X-ray film records these differences to produce an image of body tissue structures and these are shadows seen on the X-ray.
